Cusco - Coricancha
We will begin by first visiting the most important temple of Coricancha (Temple of the Sun) which was the central temple of the vast Incan Empire. Here you will witness supreme stone craftmanship incomparable to any other site in the world. You will learn about the Inca King Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, Francisco Pizarro and the Spanish Inquisition. Witness firsthand stone walls which were once covered in gold.
Half Day
45 mins
Q'enqo
First we visit the caves of Qenko which in Quechua means "Labyrinth". One of the caves is a mausoleum This temple was dedicated to Mother Earth and was a unique center of celebrations and astronomical studies. It has numerous ceremonial carvings, holes and canals cut into the rock. One of its features is a semi-natural underground chamber.
30 mins
Sacsayhuaman
Next we stop at Sacsayhuaman located 3 km above the Plaza de Armas. Sacsayhuaman served as a temple for the Incas of Cusco. The festival of the Sun called Inti Raymi took place there once a year. Sacsayhuaman, a walled-complex is as many other Inca constructions made of large polished dry-stone walls, each boulder carefully cut to fit together tightly without mortar. Sacsayhuaman, is a huge, stunning site which holds the great house of the Sun, where the head of the Puma of Cusco resides. Its megalithic, zigzag stone walls were pieced together with amazing skill, drawing the snake and other Andean symbols, like a lightning bolt across a great field.
40 mins
Puka Pukara
Later on we visit Puka Pukara. This complex contains several rooms, inner plazas, aqueducts, vantage points, and pathways. It might have served as a tambo or rest/lodging area. Pukapukara means "Red Fortress" and was an an area of defense against jungle invaders. Here you will also see various Inca trails with connections to other passages.
30 mins
Tambomachay - Cusco
Next, we go to the natural springs of Tambomachay where the Incas worshipped water. There you will see lots of fountains and waterways carved into the rock by the Incas. Tambomachay might have fulfilled an important altar function linked to water and the regeneration of the land and closely linked with Pucapucara. The area covers about one hectare, and was made out of polygonally-shaped and set limestone. Bus return to Cusco.
